Surprise Tactics - Go For The Goal Straight From Kick-Off

Here are few tips to make the game a bit more fun. As a soccer coach, you want to give your players the chance to show-off their creativity and imagination with the ball, so it's good to encourage them from an early age to attempt 'surprise' moves - as long as it's not too risky!

One of the good things about soccer coaching young players is that the pitches they play on are relatively small - so why not try getting your players to aim directly for goal straight from kick-off?

It is something that needs practice in training sessions beforehand, and should be ideally reserved for just two or three players - the attackers who take the kick-off. The best way is to simply put the ball in the centre circle during soccer drills and keep getting them to shoot straight at goal - in the air, with some height, and maybe even some ball curl. This can be a good tactic as it might also lead to a corner if there are any deflections off the opposition's defence or goalkeeper. If your players get enough practice doing this, when it comes to match day, if there is a small pitch your players might try and use this surprise tactic. There is nothing to lose from having a pop at a goal!

An important thing is to give the tactic a code word, so only your players know it. In general in soccer coaching, code-words are a useful method of getting players to understand tactical moves. Let's call this exercise the 'Louis' kick.

1) Three players take the kick-off, but only one of them touches it.
2) Players one and two stand either side of the ball a little way back, looking at each other. Player three stands behind the ball some way back.
3) Player one says to player two 'Louis Kick'
4) Player three runs up and kicks the ball as hard as possible at the opposition's goal.
